SUPER FIRE BOWL

 –  written by: Nicholas Oskay

After months of planning, design and custom fabrication in conjunction with Maribeth Smith and Associates,  four Super Fire Bowls, with accompaning landscape and limestone seats were installed at the Indiana State Museum canal terrace for the NFL owners private party, hosted by Colts owner, Jim Irsay.  The Super Fire Bowls were exclusively designed and individually numbered for this function.  Made from 3/16″ thick steel, spanning six feet in diameter, and consuming upwards of 300,000 btu’s per hour per bowl, the fires roared from 9 to Midnight when temperatures dropped to 40 degrees.  Guests hovered around the bowls throughout the evening, smoking cigars and sipping cocktails as they listened to the likes of John Mellencamp, Kenny Wayne Sheperd, and Stephen Stills.  Even Mr. Irsay picked up a guitar for a few songs including a rendition of Bob Seagar’s “Turn the Page.”

Moving over 8 tons of materials with very limited access and without machinery proved logistically challenging.  The construction and deconstruction of this temporary event space consumed over 200 man hours over the period of just three days.    It took a company-wide effort to transform this otherwise empty plaza into a successful useable outdoor space in the middle of winter.  Many thanks to our installation crew for their tremendous effort.
