Start planning your season. Sitting here at my desk, I stare out my window and the view is undeniably sad for a plant person like me. The ground is covered in snow and icicles are hanging from the hoop houses, full of dreary-looking rhododendron leaves curled up in the frigid air. By now we’ve endured weeks holing up in our winter dens, just catching glimpses of the stark winter landscape when we bundle up in our heavy coats and scurry from one heated shelter to another. If the long, hot, end-of-August days are the dog days of summer then surely these are the dog days of winter. By the end of February, we’re just biding our time and every day starts to feel like check mark on the wall. Daydreaming about spring in January is too cruel, it’s just such a bitter trip back to reality knowing how far off those days really are. But within a couple of days we flip the calendar to March, and for me that means I can finally look forward to spring. It’s finally safe to allow myself to daydream about warm sun and green grass knowing that those things really are right around the corner.
When I start to daydream about spring, I think about my home landscape and everything I want to do to transform it. This year I want to get the vegetable garden in. I want to add a lot of perennials to the front beds, and maybe plant a shade tree or two in the back yard. You probably have a number of ways that you would like to see your landscape transformed as well. Maybe you’re tired of the overgrown and dated plantings around your home and want to have a fresh new look. Or maybe you’ve always thought that you would like to have a little ornamental pond full of fish and plants. Maybe you daydream about fixing summer meals in an outdoor kitchen or lazily floating around in your own pool. Whatever it is you’d like to see with your landscape, now is to perfect time to let yourself start dreaming.
As landscape architects we are by definition daydreamers. We’re experts in dreaming beautiful and creative ways to transform the landscape. We are also skilled at listening to people tell us their dreams for the landscape and bringing those ideas to life. Soon the grass really will be green and the sun warm again. Your daydream really can be a reality right outside your door. If you have a daydream for your landscape and are ready see it become a reality, now is the time to talk to a landscape architect at Mark M. Holeman, Inc. about how to make it happen. Give us a call or contact us through our website where you can see many examples of the ways we are experts in turning landscape daydreams into reality.
