Outdoor Living at its finest.

Outdoor living at its finest. If your idea of a good evening at home is sitting outside on your own patio with a beer or glass of wine in one hand and grill tools in the other turning burgers, then you are no stranger to an impressive current trend. According to the Hearth, Patio, and Barbeque Association, seventy-five percent of American households include some form of outdoor grill or smoker.

In our landscape business we are seeing clients requesting more outdoor grilling areas. Whether you’re looking for a space to grill on the deck or patio, a grilling center, or a full-blown sheltered space for cooking and dining, outdoor cooking areas are at the top of most people’s lists.

Because of the weak economy the last few years many are staying at home and enjoying their backyards. And one way to enjoy it is to have some friends over for a cook-out or barbeque. We, as landscape architects and designers, not only design landscapes but also everything that goes along with it, like outdoor kitchens, grill spaces, and dining areas.

Outdoor living has been growing for over a half century ever since the Weber Company introduced it’s now famous tub shaped grill to the scene. But recently outdoor grilling has been taken to new and higher levels. According to Weber’s ‘Grill Watch Survey’, which was recently published, spending on outdoor appliances has increased over eight percent from the same period last year. The extent that people are going to cook at home has increased tremendously.

From just a simple grill replacement, an all out upgrade, or a full blown outdoor kitchen, people are moving the kitchen outside. Some even include a covered pavilion with living room style furniture, a television, and fireplace. Today’s grills are bigger and better, even pizza ovens and pellet grills have appeared. Outdoor components are big also like extra burners, cabinets, wine coolers, refrigerators, family room style furniture; even a special cabinet for the Big Green Egg is available from the Brown Jordan outdoor furniture company.

There is a grill now for every budget, from big companies like Weber, from $29.00 to around $3,000. The high end manufactures can go from $15,000-$20,000, just the thing for the Grillin’ King in your household.
